Singer and songwriter Anjelique & her band Sweet City Band took the award for Best New Female Artist and Best New Group at the 39th Annual Tejano Music Awards held at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in San Antonio on November 16, 2019. The singer was nominated in four categories at this year’s awards which included Best New Female Artist, Best New Group, Collaboration of the Year, and Video of the Year. Anjelique was already a Top 5 nominated artist for Best New Female category in 2011, 2012, and 2015 but wasn’t able to take the award home until this year. “As they were getting ready to announce the winner, I had already prepared myself to hear someone else’s name”, stated Anjelique, “Then they called my name and I couldn’t believe it!”.
Anjelique has been singing and performing professionally since 2001. This was Anjelique's first performance at the Tejano Music Awards, where she performed the nominated duet recorded with Shelly Lares, “Yo Te Extranare”. Their vocal performance was powerful and heartfelt amongst the crowd as their voices rang out in the historic auditorium. During one of her acceptance speeches, the singer was quoted as saying “For those that don’t know who Anjelique and the Sweet City Band is, get ready ‘cause we are coming to you guys!” When asked why she included that in her speech, Anjelique had this to say, “Texas is a huge state and it has a lot of ground to cover. Not only do we need to cover more parts of Texas but the nation as well. Tejano is all over the nation. We have only begun.”
Anjelique’s latest album entitled Propósito is available on all digital platforms. Hit songs on the album include Yo Te Extrañare, No Pienses en Volver, Mi Vida Loca, and La Otra.
